Privacy policy
What this site collects, why it collects it, and what you can make us do about it. Written to be read rather than skimmed past.
Who is responsible
RoomRent.ie is the data controller for everything described here. For anything about your data, write to hello@roomrent.ie. We answer within one month, which is what the law allows us.
What we collect, and why
Nothing is collected that the site does not need to work. In practice that is:
- Your account. Email address and a password, or your name, email address and profile picture if you sign in with Google. Kept so you can log back in and so messages reach you.
- Which side you are on. Whether you are letting a room or looking for one, so you land on the right dashboard.
- A phone number, if you list a room. Kept private. It is never shown on a listing, never sent to another user, and never returned by any public part of the site. It is there so we can reach you about your own listing, and so a verified number can earn the verified host mark.
- Your listing. The room, the rent, the dates, the description, the area and optionally an Eircode. The Eircode is used only to place the map pin and is never displayed.
- Photographs you upload. See the section on photos below.
- Messages. The enquiries and replies between you and the other person, so the conversation survives you closing the tab.
- Saved rooms and saved searches. Visible only to you. Not even the owner of a room can see who saved it.
- Counts. How many times a listing was viewed, saved or enquired about, per day. Numbers only, shown to the owner of that listing.
- Payments, if you buy a listing plan. The amount, the plan and a reference from the payment provider. Card details never touch this site.
Where a room appears on the map
A pin is deliberately approximate. A listing is placed on its town, not its door, with a small random offset applied on top, so two rooms in the same town do not sit on the same point and no pin identifies a house. The exact address is something an owner shares directly when they agree a viewing, not something the site publishes.
Photographs
Every photo is redrawn in your own browser before it is uploaded. That shrinks it, and it also strips the metadata a phone writes into a picture, including the GPS position of the house. What reaches our storage is pixels and nothing else.
Photos on a published listing are public: anyone with the link can load them. Deleting a photo removes the file as well as the record of it.
Who else sees any of this
We do not sell data and we do not run advertising. Data is handled by the companies that run the site for us, and by nobody else:
- Supabase hosts the database, the accounts and the photo storage, in the EU.
- Hostinger hosts and serves the site itself.
- Resend sends the emails about your enquiries and your listing, once email is switched on.
- Stripe takes payment for paid listing plans, once payments are switched on. Stripe handles card details directly; we never see them.
- OpenStreetMap serves the map tiles, so loading a page with a map on it reaches their servers.
- Google Fonts serves the typefaces, so loading any page reaches Google and tells them your IP address. If that matters to you, a content blocker stops it and the site still works.
Other users see what you choose to publish: your listing, your first name on a room page, and whatever you write in a message. They do not see your email address or your phone number unless you send it yourself.
Cookies
There are no advertising or analytics cookies on this site, so there is no consent banner to click past. The only cookies set are the ones that keep you signed in. Clearing them signs you out.
How long it is kept
- Your account and profile until you ask us to delete it.
- A listing until you take it down, or until it expires and you delete it. Deleting a listing deletes its photos and its enquiries with it.
- Messages for as long as the enquiry they belong to exists.
- Payment records for as long as tax law requires us to keep them, which is longer than the rest.
Your rights
Under GDPR you can ask us for a copy of what we hold about you, to correct it, to delete it, to hand it over in a portable form, or to stop a particular use of it. Ask at hello@roomrent.ie and it costs you nothing.
If you are not happy with how we answer, you can complain to the Data Protection Commission, which is the Irish supervisory authority.
Children
This site is not for under-18s. Accounts are for adults letting or renting a room.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that matters, the date at the top changes and anyone with an account is told by email before it takes effect.

The short version: your number stays private, your photos lose their GPS before they leave your phone, pins never point at a front door, and nothing here is sold to anybody. The terms of use cover the rest.
